Estrela BasilicaBuilt by the order of Queen Mary I to fulfill a promise for giving birth to a son (Jose, Prince of Brazil). It was finished in 1790, somewhat ironically, 2 years after Jose died of smallpox.
- Remains of Queen Mary I
Here are the mortal remains of Queen Mary I in what appears to be a large black bathtub. I guess that's just how they roll in Portugal. - LIght a Candle
Apparently, open flames are no longer permitted in this church, so, you can drop a coin in this box and an LED candle will light up for you....which I guess still 'counts', technically speaking. - Basilica Da Estrela Panorama
This is a fisheye view of the inside of the church. Side to side, it's 180 degrees and top to bottom, it's 90 degrees. - Basilica Da Estrela
Built by the order of Queen Mary I and completed in 1790. What seemed to set it apart from the other churches I saw was the very large dome and the copious use of colored marble (most everything in Lisbon is made of limestone). - Dome of Basilica Da Estrela
This is the inside of the dome.
