Home / Joe Wise / Portugal / Quinta da Regaleira 8
This was my favorite place in all of Portugal. Though named 'Quinta da Regaleira', it was transformed into it's current state by the subsequent owner, Carvalho Monteiro during the turn of the century. It's an opulent estate house and chapel surrounded by amazing gardens and grounds.
- Waterfall Lake
You come out of the tunnel from the bottom of the Initiatic Well here, in the center of the photo, then take the stepping stones across the water to exit the area. - Initiatic Well
This "subterranean tower" is 27 meters "tall". The top is actually at ground level (where this picture was taken). From the top, you walk the spiral all the way down to the bottom. - Regaleira Tower
Overlooks the chapel and the main house and entrance. - Initiatic Well
This is at the bottom of the well looking up. At the bottom, there are multiple long and confusing tunnels. I picked one at random for my exit. - Waterfall Lake
After walking an unnervingly long dark tunnel from the bottom of the initiatic well, I came out here, at Waterfall Lake. - Sitting Bench
A small covered sitting area with wysteria growing over it and the ornate main gate in the background. - House and Chapel
On the left is the Chapel and on the right is the main house. - Mantle
This is the extremely ornately carved limestone mantle in he main dining room of the house.
