Home / Joe Wise / Thailand / Ayutthayah / Wat Mahathat 5
Wat Mahathat (of Ayuttaya....there are many 'Wat Mahathats') was built in the 1300s.
- Main Prang
The mount of bricks to the left is what is left of the main prang of Wat Maha That. It originally stood at 50m but, after the last earthquake, fell to pretty much what you see today. A pile of bricks about 20m high. In the background are 2 minor prangs and the far background is the main prang of another site. - Three Prangs
- Leaning Prangs of Wat Mahathat
Typical of the site. Many of the prangs and chedis are listing dangerously, presumable from earthquakes. - Three Chedis
- Buddha Head in Banyan Tree
Probably the most famous part of all of Ayuttaya. This Buddha head has been entangled in the roots of a banyan tree. It's actually far less dramatic in real life. The head itself is about a foot tall and it's only about 2 feet off the ground. Still pretty cool, though.
