Home / Joe Wise / Mexico / Hacienda Mundaca 5

I'd read about this place before going, but wasn't totally sure what to expect. It turned out to be a bit of a tourist trap, er, well as much of a tourist trap as it can be for something that charged an entrance fee of $2.50 USD. Mundaca was a slave trader and pirate who decided to retire on Isla Mujeres. He built a large complex of gardens surrounding his retirement house to impress a young (teenager) girl on the mainland with whom, he'd fallen in love. In the end, she left him for another guy more her age. Mundaca also built his grave about 75 meters from his house, but it is empty, as he ended up being buried in a cemetery on the mainland. And as you can see from his house, crime doesn't pay.
