This was one of the main reasons I went to India. This is one of the many complexes of cave temples. That's actually a bit of a misnomer. They are entirely human made, which is to say, they are not natural caves. All of the sculpture and structure were carved directly from the rock in situ. It appeals to my sense of perfectionism.
- 7 Falls
At the 'top' of the canyon are these 7 waterfalls. They empty into the river that flows through the canyon past all of the caves. - Unfinished Cave
This is a neat unfinished cave that showed how things were done back then. 16 men would work front to back, and top to bottom, roughing out the approximate shape and objects. Another group of 16 men would then come in and work, again, front to back, top to bottom, doing the finish carving. Lastly, 16 more men would come in to finish the painting. This particular cave didn't quite finished the first roughing out stage. - Cave 10
I couldn't really say why, but this format of cave temple was my favorite. There is a hallway going all the way around on the other side of the colums. The wall is very ornately carved with sculptures and statues. - Unfinished Scupture
I kind of liked these unfinished statues. - 2 Falls
Just a closeup of the last 2 waterfalls that empty into the Ajanta complex river. - Ajanta Caves
This is from the center of the horseshoe shaped canyon. All the caves entrances are visible in this picture on the outer side of the horseshoe shaped canyon wall. - Cave 26
